How to Load, Secure and Keep Your Trailer Cargo in Place

Securing your cargo properly is not just about preventing damage—it’s a legal and safety requirement. Whether you’re transporting furniture, tools, or construction materials, knowing how to strap down your load correctly can save you from costly mishaps and potential accidents.

Choose the Right Equipment

Not all straps and tie-downs are created equal. Heavy-duty ratchet straps are best for securing larger loads, while bungee cords are useful for keeping lighter items in place. Chains may be necessary for particularly heavy cargo, like industrial equipment. (We would recommend one of our plant trailers if you are towing industrial equipment)

Distribute Weight Evenly

An unevenly loaded trailer can become unstable, leading to swaying or even tipping over. - Click here to learn how to stop your plant trailer from tipping. Keep heavier items low and centred over the axle to maintain stability.

Secure with Multiple Tie-Down Points

Using just one strap is never enough. Secure your load with multiple tie-down points to prevent shifting. Cross your straps where possible to provide additional stability.

Double Check Before Driving

Before setting off, give everything a final check. Pull on straps to ensure they are tight, test for any movement in the load, and make adjustments if needed.

Drive Cautiously

Once on the road, avoid sudden braking and sharp turns, as these can cause cargo to shift. If you’re on a long journey, stop occasionally to inspect your load and re-tighten straps if necessary.

A properly secured load means safer roads and a stress-free journey. By following these load-securing tips, you can tow with confidence. Learn more about trailer loading here!
