A well-balanced trailer is key to safe towing. If you’ve ever experienced your trailer swaying side to side (also known as snaking), you know how dangerous it can be. Here’s how to ensure your trailer is properly balanced to avoid instability.
Position Heavy Items Over the Axle
Heavy loads should be placed directly above the axle. Too much weight at the back causes the trailer to sway, while too much at the front puts excessive strain on your vehicle’s tow hitch.
Balance Side-to-Side
Uneven weight distribution can cause the trailer to lean or pull to one side. Distribute cargo evenly across the width of the trailer to maintain balance.
Secure the Load Properly
Even if your weight distribution is correct, an unsecured load can shift during transport, throwing off the balance. Use tie-down straps to keep everything in place, and check out our guide on how to load properly.
Use a Weight Distribution Hitch
For heavier loads, a weight distribution hitch can help transfer some of the trailer’s weight to the front wheels of the towing vehicle, improving stability and reducing snaking.
Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure
Under-inflated tyres can worsen instability. Check tyre pressures regularly and inflate them according to manufacturer recommendations.
A properly loaded trailer improves handling, reduces wear on your vehicle, and keeps you safe on the road. Take the time to distribute the weight correctly, and you’ll have a much smoother towing experience. Not sure what trailer you need? Click here!
